There's only one appropriate reaction when one first lays eyes on the much-anticipated redesign of the popular Toyota Corolla: wow. We've been anticipating an upgrade for the popular sedan since the start of the year. Not only has the Japanese car maker done that, they've taken it a step further with a fresh take on the model.
The new Corolla's exterior design emanates imagination. From the enlarged grille-one of several clear nods to the Avalon sedan-to its beefier presentation, it's clear that Toyota meant business with the revamped Corolla. The design doesn't stray far from the Furia Concept, which we first saw at the Detroit Auto Show to kick off 2013. All the lines, curves and design accents are still there. A nice, almost unexpected touch, is the thinly-rimmed wheels, influenced by the Scion FR-S, Toyota's sibling brand.
The new Corolla is more than just a mere facelift, though. The dashboard is nearly indistinguishable from that of the Avalon, with the addition of a Sport option. Other interior features include Bluetooth, pollen filters, and a toggle for traction control. The cabin offers a much quieter atmosphere, with many onboard materials acting to damper outside noise, and allowing drivers to better enjoy Entune, available on higher trims.
As for what's under the hood? A standard 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine that achieves 132 horsepower serves as the 2014 Toyota Corolla's power plant.
With its snappy chassis and refurbished interior, the new Corolla may be the most popular model in the series yet.
