How do you become one of the smartest companies in the world? According to the MIT Technology Review, you must be a leader in innovation, and have a good business model. Toyota earned spot number 17 on the Review's list of the 50 Smartest Companies of 2016 by doing just that.
In 2015, Toyota was awarded 1,636 patents by the United States Patent and Trademark Office -- more than any other automaker, and among the top 20 in the world! That number is only likely to go up as we continue through 2016, with the opening of the new Toyota Research Institute (TRI), a branch of the company dedicated to developing artificial intelligence with collaboration from academic institutions, including MIT itself.
Toyota has also been developing hydrogen-fuel cell vehicle and satellite communication technology which could help stop climate change, and improve vehicle connectivity.
